About RBHL
The Historic Library of Redondo Beach, our picturesque oceanside Spanish & Dutch event space established in 1930.
THE REDONDO BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY'S HISTORY
In 1885, the City of Redondo Beach assumed management of a reading room that became the town’s first library. In 1909, the growing library relocated to Redondo City Hall. It continued to expand, and the city began planning for a dedicated library building on a site overlooking the beach, adjacent to Redondo Pier. Voters approved a $50,000 bond issued in 1928, and the new library opened in 1930 in what is now Veteran’s Park.
Distinctively designed by renowned architect Lovell Bearse Pemberton, the library in Veterans Park was opened in July of 1930. A three-story building, the library combined both Spanish and Dutch colonial styles with arched windows and gables on its north and south wings. Art Deco moldings decorated the front façade, and graceful arched windows were set in almost every wall to allow visitors unrestrained views of the bay.
Redondo Beach’s Historic Library: The Jewel of Veterans Park
Built on the Esplanade to the right of a Moreton Bay Fig Tree, which still stands today and is itself a registered landmark, is the 11,400 square foot historic building contains a ballroom, mezzanine, fully equipped catering kitchen, two getting ready suites, restrooms, elevator and storage area.
The library’s architecture and beautiful location secured it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1981. After serving as Redondo’s main library for sixty years, the historic library closed in July of 1991. The Veterans Park Library Building was internally remodeled and opened in 1996 for special events. After being shuttered closed for over 5 years, in 2025 the operation of the Redondo Beach Historic Library went to MBM Hospitality and Made by Meg Catering for renovations and a grand reopening for private events.
South Bay History: Railways and Red Cars Leading To Redondo Beach
The Santa Fe Railway line was the first railroad to carry passengers to Redondo’s waterfront when it opened in 1888, and in Redondo Railway’s passenger trains made the trip to Redondo’s growing tourist/entertainment district faster and became an immediate success soon after launch.
The Pacific Electric Railway’s Red Car line connecting Redondo Beach to Los Angeles made the coastal city more accessible, playing a vital role in the development of Redondo Beach as a destination, contributing to its growth and popularity in the early 20th century.
The Red Car trolley service remained active until 1961, when it was replaced by buses and the tracks were removed.

Trend Alert! 📚📖 For couples looking for inspo, we absolutely loved how Dua Lipa and Callum Turner choose to incorporate books into their wedding reception as a nod to their origins as a couple. If you’re looking for a venue that already has the bookshelves ready for you to fill with personalized tie-ins from your own love story, contact the Redondo Beach Historic Library through the link in our bio!
In addition to her pop music career, Dua Lipa is known for being an avid reader and for running a book club. When she and Callum Turner connected in Los Angeles, they discovered they were both reading Trust by Hernan Diaz, which is why books were incorporated as part of the décor at their wedding reception. 🥰
Psssst! 👀 Slide to the last photo for a sneak peek on the current status of the Redondo Beach Historic Library renovations in the Grand Hall…!!!
